About

Hi, I'm Sandeep. By day I'm an AI Engineer at SAP AI Labs in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I build agentic AI that powers applications across different verticals — anything from enterprise sales to financial hedging. In practice that means intelligent, autonomous systems that do the real work: deep research, dashboards and visualizations, simulations, even the slide decks nobody enjoys making. Before this, I spent over half a decade at Amazon, wrangling distributed systems at a scale that still makes me a little nervous.

I've been writing here for a few years now, mostly about AI, engineering, and the parts of a software career nobody warns you about. Honestly, I'm just thinking out loud and hoping it's useful to someone a few steps behind me (usually a younger version of myself).

At home, my wife and I are raising a tiny, joyful toddler girl who makes every day more fun (and more gloriously chaotic). I love to swim and run when I can, and while the occasional 10K is on hold for these toddler years, chasing her around is a decent substitute. There's almost always something big and orchestral playing while I work — Two Steps from Hell, Audiomachine, ES Posthumus, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Zack Hemsey. It makes even an ordinary workday feel a little epic.

Building things is how I switch off. There's always a side project or two on the go. Most never ship publicly (my GitHub can look like a graveyard of half-finished repos), but plenty of them quietly run in my own life, scratching some very specific itch. The shipping was never really the point. The joy is in the building. Usually a project is just an excuse to play with whatever new technology, library, or framework has caught my eye, and I'm the kind of person who'll happily start a new repo on vacation.

Away from screens, I think on paper. I've got an embarrassing soft spot for a good pen and a fresh notebook, and I take notes on just about everything. I run my whole life on to-do lists too; there's one for almost everything, and they're the main reason I haven't lost the plot since becoming a parent. I read a fair amount, mostly in the in-between moments: a few stolen pages that add up to a couple dozen books a year, anything from sci-fi to biographies to old philosophy. The rest of my time goes to photography that sometimes lands on Instagram, rewatching more Frasier than is strictly reasonable, and helping out where I can: mentoring engineers earlier in their careers, and being a technical sounding board (and occasionally lending a hand) for a couple of friends building startups.

If you want to talk about any of this, or something else entirely, I'm at me@sandeepraju.in.
